Int. 919-2026 was introduced on May 20, 2026 and referred to the Committee on Consumer and Worker Protection. The proposal would create an AI oversight office in DCWP with complaint, investigation, outreach and rule-recommendation functions focused on AI uses within laws DCWP can enforce.
What the proposal would do
The Council summary says the office would establish a process and online portal for AI-related complaints, investigate allegations within its consumer-law jurisdiction, recommend enforcement actions or referrals, perform outreach and issue advisories, and recommend rules clarifying or expanding how consumer protection laws apply to AI.
Why LL144 readers should watch it
DCWP already enforces Local Law 144. A dedicated AI oversight office inside the same department could affect the broader institutional environment for AI-related complaints and enforcement if enacted. The current text, however, is a proposal and its consumer-law jurisdiction should not be automatically treated as a direct amendment to LL144.
What this does not mean
The bill is not enacted as of September 18, 2026. It does not currently change Local Law 144's audit, publication or notice requirements, and it should not be described as an active new enforcement office.
